Ready to tackle the topics that you've been curious about, but never felt comfortable asking? With a straightforward, no nonsense perspective on life, blended with candid stories and a healthy dose of humor, doctor Mary Grimberg cuts through the fluff and addresses the conversations we all need to have on TMI Talk, where no subject is too taboo, our bodies, our minds, and everything in between. Now, here's your host, doctor Mary. Hello, everyone, and welcome to the very first episode of TMI talk with doctor Mary. In this episode, I'm gonna talk to you all about why I rebranded from sex and wellness with doctor Mary to TMI talk with doctor Mary, and then what to expect in future episodes from here on out. So knowing this, I'm just gonna go ahead and dive right in. So maybe you've all known, maybe not. I'll dive into a little bit of my story. But basically, in 2019, I had Hodgkin's lymphoma, so I had to go through cancer treatment for about three and a half months. And soon after that, I got divorced. Soon after that was COVID. And it was just one thing after another after another. And what this did is it launched me into basically an awakening of understanding what the hell am I doing with my life? What can I do to live more authentically and to stop people pleasing? I just knew that I wanted to be there, but I didn't know how to get there. And each phase over the last 5 years has really helped me understand more about health than I ever thought that I would understand in a different way. Right? These are very unconventional approaches to health that I have been working through. And so one of the biggest things that I found as I started really diving in and going to understanding myself authentically after cancer and after all this pain that I went through was realizing how much I suppressed my authentic self. And when I suppressed my authentic self, this was because I was a chronic people pleaser. And what I didn't realize is that this was showing up on how I was showing up online. And I was showing up in sex and wellness with doctor Mary, although you'll see bits and pieces of who I am in there and my silliness and playfulness. But in all reality, I was trying to be somebody that I wasn't in certain aspects. Right? I wasn't able to show up authentically as myself because I was worried about what people would think. I'm still in there. There's, the episodes are still jam packed with great information, but I wanted to come at you with showing up as myself. And part of the healing journey and in my healing journey is showing up again as myself. And what I've realized over these last few years is that I've tried every diet. I've tried every removing every toxin that I can. I've tried everything under the sun to help me understand my health. And what I realized this whole time, the common thread underneath was when you can show up authentically and you can show up as yourself, fuck the people pleasing, all of that, take expectations out, right, of how you show up and being able to be yourself, you realize it pulls your body out of this constant fight or flight that it was in. Right? So if I'm putting a mask on every time I meet somebody new or showing up online, it's gonna drain me. And over time, I was realizing, oh my gosh, I'm exhausted. I'm not actually enjoying these things because I have to put on this mask and it's exhausting. And so what I've realized over the last year especially is I did have a pretty big spiritual awakening and understanding how spirituality and the mind and body are all connected. And not saying religion or anything like that, just spirituality. Right? Our beliefs beyond what we can see in the material world and how this plays with Western medicine and Eastern medicine and how they work all together. And on top of it, I realized that even with clients and then my friends is that I have become this person that so many people come to for medical advice and knowing, hey, which direction to go? What does this mean? Breaking down medical jargon. And I realized, gosh, I wanna give this to my audience. Right? I want them to feel like I'm their best friend breaking down medical jargon for them, telling them, you know, this is actually what this means, even though medically it can sound scary. Right? So I wanted to be that person that can show up for you and be real. And what I realized on top of this as well is that there's so much in between medical and living. There's this massive gap, and I wanna blend that gap. And what does that actually mean? It means like, okay, for instance, if you have pain with sex or you have pelvic pain, right, how does that show up in relationships? You know, I can help treat your pelvic pain in the clinic, but okay, well, how do we integrate this back into wanting to enjoy sex with your partner again, or addressing difficult conversations that occur when maybe we start dating or we start going into work and we need to advocate for ourselves and understand boundaries, understand how to communicate our needs in all these different aspects. And then on top of it, understanding how the way we show up every day actually directly affects our health. And I realized another thing on top of this is that humor and joy are one of the biggest gifts that we can have with healing. And just looking at all the different neurotransmitters they release when we laugh, it makes us feel good and we feel joyful. And when we feel joy, that's a big piece that's missed in our healing journey. And that's something I've always had a sense of humor, but it dampened a bit when I was going, and I'm still going through my healing journey. There's no end in sight. That's just life. Right? It's more of how do I just bring that back in and make things that are really taboo right now, or these gaps of knowledge in between medical and real life, how does that show up and how does that come to play? And what are these taboo topics that people aren't addressing? And how can I wrap all of that in a package of breaking it down to be realistic, removing shame around it? When we talk about taboo topics and remove shame, I can tell you that relieves so much stress from our nervous system and our bodies. And ultimately, when we do that, it helps us heal. And these are unconventional ways of healing. I'm not saying there's still the physical body that we're gonna be addressing. Right? And we're gonna be talking about all these different topics, but there's a need to blend the mind, body, and spirit in a variety of different ways. And, yes, I have become a little woo, but I also love science. And I thought there's this huge gap between science, woo, and reality and how I can bring that to you. So I'm really excited to be able to do that. So in summary, the next this whole season and in future episodes, it's gonna be talking about taboo topics that aren't talked about. It's gonna be talking about understanding our lifestyle and how it affects our nervous system. I'm gonna be the person that shows up and breaks things down for you so medical jargon isn't overwhelming. And finally, again, I want to be the person that blends that Eastern and Western medicine. And then also whatever your beliefs are from a spiritual standpoint, how that affects our health too. Because ultimately, I believe in this past year, I didn't have as many spiritual beliefs before. I kind of lost that. And when I can tap into that and know that there is something greater out there that is taking care of us as well, and we can lean on that, That also can take the pressure off of our nervous system to know that, hey, there are different ways to approach health. And, you know, you can take and leave what you want from what I say. But I just think this is a great way to blend every aspect of me all in one package. So that way, you get to benefit from all of the learning I've had to do from my medical background as a pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist to my own healing journey as somebody that's been gaslit and has dealt with cancer and complex PTSD in this medical system that will drive you wild. And then on top of it, the unconventional ways of healing, like understanding how spirituality and the mind body connection all work together. I am really excited to bring this to you, and I hope that you enjoy this. And please feel free to send me a message if there's any topics in particular that you would like to address that maybe aren't typically addressed. And I know physical therapists in general, we tend to be so dismissive of other professions and our ego tends to get in the way. Just know that I have worked through that to put my ego aside so that way I can show up for you and help you in a variety of different ways.
